This Saturday join Maui Solomon (from The Morirori of Rekohu exhibition), Moana Jackson, Moana Maniopoto with an introduction by Susan Forbes.
This will be a forum discussion and debate on intellectual and cultural property. What are the ethics in and around the issue of cultural property and the commodification of identity?

The Mouth and Foot Painting Artists is a self-help organisation which gives disabled people the opportunity to fulfill their creative ambitions while still maintaining financial independence. Here in New Zealand there are 22 artists.

Change & Exchange exhibition opening is on Sunday 19 September at 1.45pm followed by an artist talk by Roka Ngarimu-Cameron at 2.30pm
Roka Ngarimu-Cameron will talk about the similarities between the kilt and the cloak. Nga Kakahu: Change & Exchange is a celebration of the art of Maori weaving from both a Maori and Pakeha perspective. The exhibition brings together for the first time sculptor Jo Torr and Maori weaver, Roka Ngarimu-Cameron, who both find inspiration in the traditional Maori art of cloak weaving.

The White Goddess is seen as a symbol of fertility, regeneration and hope and has become a universal symbol for brides in many countries. Explore the archetypal White Goddess as seen in the wedding dresses and paintings by Kerrie Hughes and the elaborate millinery skills of Liza Foreman.

The Inventor Next Door Exhibition Floortalk
Joy Alcock . Inventor of the Word Detective range of resources talking about how children learn to spell and read
Joy is an author, publisher and literacy consultant who is also a member of the Ministry of Education's National Literacy Reference Group. Joy has developed the Word Detective range of resources that include spelling resources, early reading series, music, CDs and interactive games and posters.
Joy will be talking about how children learn to read and spell and why some children find it difficult.

The Revival of the Moriori - Maui Solomon
Maui Solomon is the General Manager for Hokotehi Moriori Trust. He is a Moriori/Maori barrister specialising in law on the protection of indigenous rights and intellectual property.
He has spent most of his adult life advocating for the better recognition and protection of rights of indigenous peoples including that of the Moriori.
He says he believes in a more peaceful world but to achieve this we must, as a human species, evolve to a higher spiritual plain than we have thus far achieved. "My Moriori ancestors managed to live in peace for 500 years and us descendants carry that legacy with us today as a beacon of hope and inspiration."

Jo Torr currently lives in Wellington where she works as a registrar at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Her work is included in public museums and private collections. She is represented by the Mark Hutchins Gallery, Wellington.

Kareen Holland has a comprehensive knowledge of skincare and cosmetics and her business Earth 174° has a low carbon footprint and locally sourced ingredients that are made within kilometres of point of sale. The products are free of parabens, petrochemicals or synthetic additives. Gregor Kregar is a sculptor who combines a variety of materials and media in his work. Using a familiar subject matter like the ubiquitous sheep, Gregor plays with subject matter and mixes up meaning whilst dealing with the familiar. Join Gregor as he talks about his new work made for this iconic exploration of the sheep.

Calling all creative kids! Come along to the 'Art Zone'. We will explore different ways of drawing, painting, printing, sculpting, and much more. Have fun using some wonderful new materials, and developing new skills. Be inspired by some of the fantastic artworks that come into the gallery, and let the creativity begin!
'Art Beat' - Gifted and Talented, Art Extension classes 13-18 yrs Thursday 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm $6 per class - all materials provided
Are you a young artist who wants to learn more? Would you like a chance to use your amazing creative skills? The 'Art Beat' art extension group is for you. Create your own visual diary, learn new techniques, develop new skills, and learn how to extend your ideas into seriously good artworks. You will be challenged and supported in an inspiring art gallery environment. Who knows one day there may be space on Pataka's walls for you!
All Classes limited to 12 students per group. First in first served, so be in quick!
Artfix - Adult Art Classes Fridays 1 pm - 3 pm $6 per class - all materials provided
Wish to extend your art making skills in a friendly environment? Come and learn practical skills in the context of the art gallery. We will make work from a range of materials in a variety of media. Learn to draw from observation, paint with depth, use colour more effectively and communicate visually.
Students will be extended at their own level, beginners and artists with some experience are both welcome.
All classes are run by trained and experienced teachers. Spaces are limited so be in quick.
